What You Need To Know
Second graders will review what they learned in first grade, then move on to new skills. As they go along, they'll start to convert language into math problems (for instance, "take away" means subtraction, "and" means addition). By year's end they should have learned how to:
- Add and subtract numbers with two and three digits
- Compare temperatures using a thermometer (not digital, obviously)
- Use time to chart the events of the day
- Recognize various geometric shapes
- Measure length, weight, and capacity
How You Can Help
At the grocery store, ask them to estimate the weight of your produce before you set it on the scale, then compare. Let your child "pay" and count the change the cashier gives.
Rather than telling time for them, point them to a wall clock, or show them your watch and let them read the hands.
As you drive to school in the morning, count to 100. Make it fun! "One alligator, two alligators..."
