Additionally, although this is not inevitable, the quality of parenting is often even lower in remarried families than in single-mother households. The rules change, family members take on different roles, and it takes time to sort things out and establish new routines and responsibilities. There may be competition between children and stepfather for the mother's time and attention, leaving the mother with less time than before to parent effectively. Such competition may be more stressful for girls than for boys, especially if daughters have been providing friendship and close emotional support to their divorced mothers. Stepfathers tend to be less involved and less emotionally supportive than continuously married biological fathers, and they provide less discipline and supervision of children (Hetherington & Clingempeel, 1992). There is some evidence that establishing a successful relationship between stepparent and stepchildren may be more difficult when the children are adolescents than when they are younger, but this finding is not consistent (Bray, 1999; Buchanan et al., 1996). Generally, most children fare well in step families, but there are challenges.
