Experimental Procedure
- Start by making a hypothesis. Which stain will be removed fastest?
- Use scissors to cut 12 pieces of each fabric. Each piece should be at least a 1- by 1-inch square.
- Take one piece of white t-shirt fabric. Using the pencil, draw a one-inch line on the fabric.
- Time for exactly one minute after stain has been applied before continuing.
- Press down twice on stain with the tip of the Tide to Go (stain remover) stick.
- Rub rag on stain while timing. Make sure to use the same rhythm and force for every trial. Rub for up to 150 seconds.
- Stop timer when stain is completely removed, or when 150 seconds has elapsed.
- Record the time it took on your chart. If stain was not completely removed after 150 seconds, note this information along with your observations on how the stain did change.
- Repeat #s 2-8 with the other two fabrics (towel and jeans).
- Take one piece of white t-shirt fabric. Using the blue pen, draw a one-inch line on the fabric.
- Repeat steps 4-9.
- Take one piece of white t-shirt fabric and spoon 1/4 teaspoon of tomato sauce onto it. Rub in.
- Repeat steps 4-9.
- Take one piece of white t-shirt fabric and pour two drops of soy sauce onto it. Rub in.
- Repeat steps 4-9.
- Repeat steps 3 through 15 two more times. Now you will have completed three trials.
- You have now finished gathering your data. Look at your data and figure out which stains were removed the fastest in each trial.
- Clean up.
