5. Develop His Derivational and Relations Spelling
Eleven- to fourteen-year-olds enjoy exploring the relationship between spelling and meaning. During this stage, children learn that similar spellings have similar meanings (such as "wise-wisdom" and "nation-national"). They also study consonant alternations ("magic-magician"), vowel alternations ("define-definition"), and root words.
Encourage your child to keep a notebook of unfamiliar words. Have him jot down where he came across the word, research the word's meaning in a dictionary, and then write down related words.
