Seven- to nine-year-olds start learning about long- and short-vowel words, common vowel sounds ("ew" in "sew"), and complex consonant sounds ("tch" in "itch").
Flashcards are a great way to help your child get the grasp of within-word pattern spelling. Think up different categories (e.g. "words that have a long 'a' sound," "words that end in '-tch'"), then brainstorm with your child to think of words that fit in that group.
