Words with two vowels back to back, such as pail or snail, are intimidating to new readers, but there's a trick to decoding them. When two vowels appear together, the first one is long and the second one is silent! Help your first grader get to know words with the vowel pair ai, and sneak in some writing practice while you're at it.
