Teaching with Second Grade Worksheets

Second grade is a transitional year, when kids are tasked with taking what they have learned thus far and putting their new skills to the test. The worksheets above not only reinforce skills, but help parents to observe areas where children may need extra support. Here is a short list of the material covered in second grade:
  • Language Arts: Reading grade-appropriate chapter books fluently is the big focus in second grade. Writing with the use of punctuation, good spelling, and complete sentences is also an expectation this year. For more practice in this area, browse our spelling worksheets.
  • Math: Second graders will learn to add and subtract double-digit numbers, and will also be introduced to multiplication and division.
  • Science: Second graders will be tasked with making predictions about events in the natural world. They will also learn about the history of the Earth through fossil evidence.
  • Social Studies: Second grade will ask children to compare people and communities in their part of the world with those in other parts of the world. They will also be asked to mediate some of their own conflicts with peers.
