Activity
Colored Emotions
Understanding emotions can be a helpful tool for self-regulation. In this social emotional learning activity, your child will practice identifying different emotions and explore how they connect with various gestures and facial expressions. Then they will take their newfound knowledge and use it to play an entertaining game of emotions charades—a fun game for the whole family!
What You Need:
- "Identify the emotion..." video (YouTube)
- Charades with Emotions worksheet
- Paper
- Pencil
What You Do:
- Ask your child how they are feeling right now.
- Ask them, "What are all the feelings and emotions you can think of?"
- As they respond, write down a list of emotions.
- Show the "Identify the Emotion..." video.
- Afterwards, review all the emotions that were mentioned in the video.
- Take out the Charades with Emotions worksheet, and prepare to play. If possible, have more people join!
- To play charades with emotions:
- One person chooses an emotion from the list on the Charades with Emotions worksheet, without telling the others which emotion they have picked.
- This person acts out the emotion, while the other players guess what it is. (Images/ words may also be used to help others guess the emotion.)
- The person who correctly guesses the emotion goes next and acts out a new emotion from the worksheet, while everyone else guesses what the emotion is.
- Continue playing until all emotions on the worksheet have been acted out.
- Have fun!
