Compassion: Seeing Clearly
Hearing true stories of compassionate people can be uplifting and inspiring! In this home activity, your child will explore what it means to be compassionate and watch a video to learn about a real life hero: Yash Gupta. Then they will set and complete goals to bring compassion to their home and/or community. This social emotional learning activity is geared toward second and third graders and designed to foster important self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills.
What you need:
- CNN Hero: Yash Gupta (YouTube)
- Community Compassion worksheet
What you do:
- Ask your child, "Who are some people in the community who help others who are struggling?"
- Ask, "What does it mean to be compassionate? How do you feel when others help you if you are having a hard time?"
- Ask, "When have you shown compassion for others?"
- Show your child the video "CNN Hero: Yash Guta."
- After the video, ask you child, "Why did Yash want to help others receive glasses? How did this affect his community? The world?"
- Ask, "What is one thing you would like to do in your home or in the community to help others?"
- Review the Community Compassion worksheet and work with your child to complete it.
