Decimal Place Value Tricks

What You Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil

What You Do:

When reading a decimal, to say it correctly, place the number 1 under the decimal. Then, add a zero under each following number, and it will show you the place value.

For example:

Write a 1 directly under the decimal and a zero under the 5. Read it as five tenths.

Here is another example:

Put a 1 under the decimal and two zeros for each additional number. Thus, read the number as 55 hundredths.

This number can be read as 555 thousandths.
