Explore Career Options
This Labor Day, encourage your child to start thinking about jobs she'd like to learn more about and might consider for her future career. Using catalogues, magazines and brochures she will create a collage of jobs she'd like to research. This collage will serve as the cover to an essay about these possible job options.

Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- Magazines, brochures, catalogues with images of professionals
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Lined notebook paper
- Pencil
- Stapler
What You Do:
- Look through catalogues, magazines and brochures with your child, discussing different occupations and the responsibilities of each job. Talk about a variety of jobs. Some jobs help people and animals, while others are for entertainment, or helping to build or repair things. There are also jobs which are for investors, and others for inventors. Which of these potential career options interests your child the most?
- Have her cut out images associated with the professions that interest her the most.
- Encourage her to glue the images she has collected onto a sheet of construction paper as a collage to be used for the cover of an essay.
- On a separate sheet of paper, ask her to brainstorm ideas for why these jobs interest her. What responsibilities do these workers have? Why would their jobs be fulfilling? Why would she be good at these jobs, and what would be required to learn how to do these jobs?
- Have her write an essay based on her brainstorming. If she likes, she can begin with an outline to organize her essay before she begins writing.
- Staple the collage to the top of the essay.
- Ask her to read her essay in observance of Labor Day.
