Construct a Frank Lloyd Wright Bookmark
Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect with a unique style. He coined the organic style of architecture during the early 1930s, and, along with being the architect, also made most of the furniture found in the homes he designed. Today, many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes are museums meant to maintain his workmanship. Your child can emulate Wright’s unique style by making a bookmark that uses his organic style as an influence!
What You Need:
- Construction paper
- Ruler
- Glue
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Start by taking a look at architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright with your child either online or by visiting your local library. Offer him a sheet of paper to take notes on Wright’s style and make sketches of designs he likes.
- Now offer your child sheets of construction paper to create his Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired bookmark. He can pick one color to use for the cutouts, and another as the base for his bookmark.
- Invite your child to revisit his sketches and notes to use for creating a final bookmark design. Wright used repeating patterns along with geometric shapes in his architecture. Encourage your child to focus on one pattern to use for his bookmark.
- Next, he can cut the base color of construction paper into a 3" x 9" strip. He can cut the top strip the same size, too.
- Now he can begin folding and cutting the sheet of construction paper to create the top layer of the bookmark. Encourage him to experiment with how he folds his paper for cutting his unique design!
- Once he’s satisfied with the cut piece of construction paper, he can carefully glue the top layer to the base strip of construction paper.
- All that’s left is to start reading a good book so that his new Frank Lloyd Wright bookmark can be used to keep his place!
