Halloween Gift Bags
How would your child turn a flat sheet of paper into something that can hold volume? Making gift bags for a Halloween party, or treat bags for tricker-treaters can serve as the perfect opportunity for your child to practice folding paper into a pouch that can hold objects such as candy or small toys. This delightful craft will allow your child to learn a bit about geometry and origami just in time for Halloween!
What You Need:
- Orange construction paper
- Tempera paint (black and white)
- Small paint brushes
- Pencil
- Tape
- Tissue paper, or netting
- Candy, toys or coins
What You Do:
- Place the orange sheet of construction paper on a table horizontally or in landscape orientation.
- Ask your child to fold a lip about 1/2" wide from the top of the paper down. Crease it so it stays in place using a fingernail.
- Have your child flip the paper upside down so the folded edge is face down.
- Encourage your child to fold the bottom edge of the paper up about 3" and crease the fold. This will become the bottom of the treat bag.
- Have your child fold in the sides of the bag so they overlap, making sure to keep the top lip of the bag folded. Tape the overlapping sides in place to create the bag.
- Flip the bag on the front and have your child paint his gift bag with a Halloween theme, using black and white tempera paint. Allow the paint to dry.
- Ask your child to gently open the bag at the top to see how a flat sheet of paper became a bag that can hold volume.
- Have your child stuff the bag with tissue paper or some sort of netting, and then fill it with treats!
