Activity
Helping Hands
Celebrating accomplishments and reflecting on times when we are at our best can be useful in building more positive behaviors and healthy growth! In this social emotional learning activity, your child will learn how slowing down and using mindfulness can help us be more aware of others' needs. You and your child will review different pictures connected to making healthy choices and reflect on how it feels to help others. Then, your child will draw a picture of a time when they made a healthy and helpful choice.
What You Need:
- Helping Hands worksheet
- Pencils
- Crayons
What You Do:
- Guide your child in a mindful breathing exercise for 1–2 minutes. Ask them to become as still as they can and to feel their breath right at their nose.
- Tell your child to slowly open their eyes, and ask them how they feel and what they notice.
- Explain to your child that sometimes we move so fast that we aren't aware of others' needs or how we feel when helping others.
- Explain to your child that when we use mindfulness and feel our breath, we can slow down and be more aware of others. We can also be aware of how it feels to show kindness to others.
- Ask your child to share about a time they helped someone else, and have them describe how they felt.
- Tell your child that you two will read about some different situations and talk about healthy choices together.
- Use the Helping Hands worksheet to guide your conversation with your child. Have them draw a picture of a time when they made a healthy choice, and display it in your home.
