Activity

Remembrance Poppy

What You Need:

  • Copy or access to the poem: "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae
  • Paper plate
  • Tissue paper (red)
  • Craft glue
  • Construction paper (black)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Cup (for tracing)

What You Do:

  1. Discuss the symbolism behind the red poppy with your child. Have her read the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae, aloud.
  2. Ask her what she thinks about the poem and how the poem makes her feel.
  3. Place the paper plate on a table in front of your child. Ask her to cut out large petals from the red tissue paper and assemble them on the plate to create a red poppy flower.
  4. Let her glue the petals in place.
  5. Have her trace the cup on the black construction paper and cut out the circle to glue on the center of the flower.
  6. Encourage her to hang her red poppy remembrance flower on a wall, or door in observance of both Veterans Day or Memorial Day (or Remembrance Day!) and all of people who have served, or were tragically killed during battle.
