Activity
Superpower Senses
Practicing mindfulness can be a great way to pay attention to our surroundings. It helps us stay safe, listen and understand others, and keeps us from missing out on anything. Just like superheroes have powerful skills and talents, with a little practice we can have the powerful skill of mindful listening! In this social emotional learning activity, students will draw a picture of the things they hear at home using their superpower sense of mindful listening.
What You Need:
- Superpower Senses at Home worksheet
- Pencils
- Crayons
What You Do:
- Ask your child what superpowers they may have.
- Engage in a conversation with your child about how practicing mindfulness (i.e. paying attention to one thing with care and attention) can be a superpower.
- Ask your child the following questions: How can mindful listening be a superpower? How can it help our family? (Potential responses: It improves focus and attention; it brings kind attention to others who are speaking.)
- With your child, go around your home and practice using your listening superpower. Write down everything you both hear, and use the Superpower Senses at Home worksheet as a guide.
- Then, ask your child to draw a representation of all the things they can hear when they listen with care and attention. Place their drawing somewhere in the home.
- Return to this practice whenever your child needs to focus and listen with care.
