What You Do:

  1. Ask your child to describe their cultural heritage. Investigate whether they know your family’s history.
  2. Search for cultural heritage education websites. One reputable website is the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
  3. On the side of the page, click Online Exhibitions.
  4. Visit and talk about these curated pages for a rich cultural experience for the whole family.
  5. Back on the home page, look under “Guides.”
  6. Download “The Smithsonian Folklife and Oral History Interviewing Guide.”
  7. Have your child use this guide to conduct interviews with their own family members.
  8. Encourage your to child compare and contrast their heritage with that of another family or culture.
