Learning Objectives

Students will learn to quickly identify groups of ten in order to strengthen regrouping skills.


Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Explain to students that many subtraction and addition problems can be made easier by dealing with groups of ten.
  • In order to do this, tell them that they need to know all the pairs, or groups of two, that make 10.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Direct your students to use sets of ten counters in two different colors. Each number will be represented with only one color.
  • On the Number Pairs worksheet, lead students through the 3 examples of pairs they most likely already know (0 + 10, 1 + 9, 5 + 5), allowing them to combine these counters into a new set of 10.
  • Question the students about any patterns they see. Potential guiding questions include: What do you notice about the first number in each of the pairs given? What about the second number in each pair?
  • See if anyone can correctly guess the number they should try to represent first. If they can, ask them to explain their reason for choosing this number to their classmates.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Monitor for understanding as they work on completing the Number Pairs worksheet.
  • When they are finished, review with students what they chose and have them explain their answers.
  • Make any corrections or give any interventions in instruction necessary at this time.

Independent Working Time (10 minutes)

  • Have students get with a partner, and provide them with the needed materials for the Tidy Sum 10 activity.
  • Review the rules for the game.
  • Instruct your students to play several rounds of the activity.



  • Enrichment: An alternate activity for students who need the challenge of a faster paced activity can still work in pairs but take turns rolling a dice. Whatever number the dice lands on, have the students race each other to give the number needed to make 10. Then, have these students record the possible number sentences to make 10. Have students work on creating a sum of 20 with a drawn card.
  • Support: Direct your students to keep the chart completed during the guided practice activity during independent working time.


Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Have students write all of the pairs of numbers that make 10 and the number sentences for these pairs in their math journals.
