Students will be able to identify adverbs and generate a list of adverbs.
- Ask students to turn to a peer and think of all of the ways to describe how someone eats. Have students make a list of words that can be used to describe how a person or animal can eat.
- Share out ideas, writing some on the board.
- Point out that some examples show the manner in which eating can be done. Some might show where, how often, when, or to what degree.
- Explain that these are all adverbs, or words that describe verbs.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Explain that there are basically five kinds of adverbs. These tell how, when, how often, where and to what degree.
- Explain how words that describe adjectives are also adverbs, as in I am very excited! VERY tells the degree of excitement.
- Distribute the Adverb Word Bank activity.
- Go over the instructions together. Have students work in pairs or small groups to generate more of each kind of adverb.
- Share lists.
Guided Practice(10 minutes)
- Distribute the worksheet All Kinds of Adverbs.
- This activity will also review the kinds of adverbs. Go over this again if necessary as you review the instructions.
- Have students use the definitions at the top as a resource as they complete the exercises at the bottom.
- Review student responses and provide suggested answers.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Distribute the worksheet Sorting Out Adverbs.
- Go over the instructions.
- Students will use higher-order thinking to apply their knowledge of adverbs and sort them into categories.
- When done, ask students to provide examples for each bubble.
- When creating the word bank, generate some words together before having students work in pairs.
- In the Sorting Out Adverbs activity, challenge students to sort all of the words on the list.
- Have students clear their desks of previous work. Have students make a graphic like the one on the sorting activity.
- Instruct them to write "Five Kinds of Adverbs" in the middle and then label each of the five outer bubbles.
- Have students provide at least two or three adverbs in each bubble.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Discuss: How are adverbs and adjectives different?
