Students will be able to define the word "determination" and discuss ways they may use determination in their life.

(10 minutes)
  • Join students together in a circle, either seated or standing.
  • Ask, "Does anyone remember the song 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider?'"
  • Ask, "What happened after the spider would fall?"
  • Explain that the song ends with a very brave and determined spider!
  • Play the "Itsy Bitsy Spider Song for Kids About Determination!" video.
  • After the video, ask students, "Even though the spider failed a few times, what did she still do?"
  • Write the word "determination" on the board.
  • Ask, "What is determination? How was the spider determined?"
  • Write the definition of determination on the board: "to move with purpose and courage." Include a picture of the successful spider at the top of the wall. Spend time unpacking what "courage" and "purpose" mean using language like, "try hard," "focus," and "not giving up." Offer examples of determination from your own life.
(15 minutes)
  • Give an example of a time in your life when you used determination.
  • Ask, "Can you give an example from your life when you were determined?"
  • Ask, "How can determination help us? How did it help the spider in our song?"
  • Review the directions on the Itsy Bitsy Determined Spider worksheet.
(10 minutes)
  • Model how to create a spider using play dough, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes.
  • Model making a mistake and then overcoming your mistake, illustrating how to use determination when creating your spider.
  • Ask if anyone has any questions.
  • Pass out the materials and worksheet.
(15 minutes)
  • Dismiss students back to their seats to work on their spiders.

Enrichment: Ask advanced students to write their own story about an animal who uses determination.

Support: Work one-on-one or in small groups with some students when working on independent work.

(5 minutes)
  • Walk around the room and check for student comprehension of "determination" during independent work. Connect with as many students as possible, and have students define "determination."
(5 minutes)
  • Bring students back together in a circle.
  • Ask them to bring their spiders with them.
  • Show them the "Determination" wall you have created, set up alongside a bookshelf.
  • Explain that all of the spiders will be placed at the top of the wall (bookshelf) as a reminder of determination.
  • Ask, "What will you think of when you see our wall with all of our spiders on top? When will you use determination?"
