EL Support Lesson
Animal Counting to 5
Students will be able to count and write numbers 1-5.
Students will be able to count objects 1-5 using one-to-one correspondence using visual supports.
- Gather the students together for a read-aloud and introduce the book, Over in the Meadow using the vocabulary cards and glossary to define words from the text.
- Hold up the cards one at a time, say the word, and have students repeat after you. Invite students to share where they might have seen or heard the word before with a partner.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Read aloud the story, Over in the Meadow pausing as you read to point out number on each page.
- Model how to count the animals on each page using one-to-one correspondance (e.g., "How many birds are there? One, two, three..." et cetera).
Guided Practice(10 minutes)
- Play the Five Little Ducks Song and count the ducks aloud with the class.
- Model writing the numbers 1-5 on the board, and invite the students to repeat the numbers after you and then practice writing each number in the air with their fingers.
- Pass out counting manipulatives to each student.
- Point to one of the numbers written on the board and say, "This is the number two. Let's all count two objects together."
- Pass out personal whiteboards and have the students practice writing the number 2.
- Repeat with remaining numbers to practice 1–5.
Group work time(10 minutes)
- Explain that now students will practice counting to five and writing the number five.
- Display the worksheet and go over the instructions.
- Pass out worksheets and send students to work independently.
Additional EL adaptations
- Gather together a small group of students to work in a teacher-led group to practice counting and writing numbers with more support.
- Allow students to count in their home language (L1).
- Ask students to count groups of objects with a partner and record the final number by writing it on their personal whiteboard.
- Invite students to practice counting objects from 0–10.
- Check in with students and assess if they can count the objects on the worksheet and write the number 5.
- Take note of students as they trace the numbers in the air and on their whiteboards to check for misunderstandings.
Review and closing(2 minutes)
- Gather students together for the closing portion of the lesson.
- Display a collection of small items (e.g., toy animals) and say, "How many animals do I have? Can you help me count them?"
- Point to one item at a time and count chorally with the students. Record the number on the board, having students repeat the sentence, "There were __ __ __ __ animals."
- Close the lesson by playing the song "Over in the Meadow" and encouraging the class to sing along.
