Academic

Students will be able to review key math skills.

Language

Students will be able to recall the counting sequence from 1-10 by counting pictures and objects.

(2 minutes)
  • Gather students together and say, "We are almost done with our school year! Today we are going to reflect or think back on what we have learned this year."
(10 minutes)
  • Read aloud the book How Many Bugs in a Box?, pausing as you read to count the bugs on each page.
  • Model using one-to-one correspondence as you count the bugs on each page.
  • Write or display the numbers 1–10 on the board and say, "We have learned a lot about counting and numbers this year. Now we will practice counting and writing our numbers together."
  • Demonstrate how to write each number and then invite students to write each number in the air with invisible paint.
(10 minutes)
  • Using the numbers displayed on the board, ask the class to count along with you as you point to each number.
  • Practice counting objects as a group (hold up items one at a time and count them aloud to find the total number).
  • Explain that students will work with a partner to go on a counting scavenger hunt!
  • Review the following directions:
    • Each pair receives a box.
    • The teacher will say a number and students will need to find the same number of items from the classroom to place in their box.
    • Students will return to the rug with their items to recount them.
    • Students will display their items for the group.
  • Play one or two rounds with the class using the numbers 1–10.
(15 minutes)
  • Explain that now students will get to paint their own picture of 10 things!
  • Model how to write the number 10 on the top of your paper and then paint 10 items (of your choosing) under the number.
  • Pass out materials and allow students to work independently.

Beginning

  • Provide students with the number 10 to trace onto their painting paper.
  • Allow students to count in their home language (L1).

Advanced

  • Allow students to choose additional numbers to paint.
  • Encourage students to explain how they are keeping track as they count.
(5 minutes)
  • Observe students during the scavenger hunt activity to assess if they are able to accurately find and count the correct number of items.
  • Assess if students are able to match a given quantity to a written number by collecting their work samples at the end of the lesson.
(5 minutes)
  • Gather students back together and invite students to go on a gallery walk to look at one another's work.
  • Highlight the different ways that students made pictures of 10.
  • Ask students to reflect on the year by saying, "Turn and talk to share what you enjoyed most about math this year."
