With the lesson plan, How My Life Will Be first graders get the opportunity to write about their future selves as 25 year olds. Using their persuasive writing skills and future tense verbs, children will write a letter to their parents telling them how they want their lives to be at age 25 and how their parents can support them to get to this point. This lesson provides handwriting practice to improve fine motor skills and introduces young learners to letter formatting—both essential skills to master.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to write a persuasive letter.
  • Students will be able to use future tense verbs when writing about how their lives will be.

Introduction

(10 minutes)
  • Ask, “What do you think your life will be like when you’re older? Picture yourself at age 25. Where do you think you’ll be living? What kind of job will you have? What will your hobbies be?”
  • Have students close their eyes and visualize their lives at age 25. Have students open their eyes and share their thoughts with a partner.
