Kindergarten Journals

Students will be able to identify and write the letter that represents the beginning sound in a word.

(15 minutes)
  • Read the book Born Yesterday by James Solheim aloud to the class.
  • Ask students what they learned about the main character in the story.
  • Briefly discuss what a diary or journal is (a place to write down things about your life and how you see the world).
  • Explain that today your students will begin their very own school diaries or journals.
(5 minutes)
  • Using the whiteboard or chart paper, demonstrate how you might write about something that happened to you today. For example, “This morning I took my dog for a walk. Then I rode the bus to school.”

  • Model how to write each word and draw a corresponding picture.
  • Explain that you can write anything you like in your journal, because it is about your life.
  • Show students how they can write in their journals even if they aren’t sure how to write words yet.
  • Tell your students that if you know the first sound in a word, you can write that letter to represent the word. You can also draw a picture and then write the first letter of the word next to the picture.
(5 minutes)
  • Ask students to think about something that happened to them that morning or the night before.
  • Invite students to turn and talk to a partner and share what happened. Encourage them to include as many details as they can remember.
  • Have a few students share out their stories.
(15 minutes)
  • Pass out the My Journal worksheet for students to draw and write on.
  • Provide support as needed. As time allows, transcribe student thinking on the bottom of their papers and/or on an index card or sticky note and attach to their page.
  • Enrichment: Encourage advanced students to write the ending sounds in their words as well as the beginning sounds.

  • Support: Provide struggling students with alphabet cards or an alphabet chart to help them match letters with their corresponding sounds.
(5 minutes)
  • Invite students to share their journal page with a partner and point to the words (or letters) as they tell their story.
  • Collect the journal pages and glue them into student notebooks or attach to binders for students to add to on a regular basis. This will allow you to note their writing progress over time.
(5 minutes)
  • Have a few students share their pictures and writing with the class.
  • Point out what students did well and applaud their work.
  • Remind the students that a journal can be written in each day and tell them that the way to become better readers and writers is to write everyday!
