Students will be able to use revision strategies to edit a piece of writing.
- Display a pre-written piece of your own writing (this should be a simple piece of writing that contains one or two sentences and an illustration).
- Read your piece aloud to the class.
- Ask them to pay attention to your illustration as well as your words.
Explicit instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Tell students that an important part of being a writer is making your writing better.
- Explain that one way a writer makes their writing better is through a process called revision. Explain that revision means going back to something you’ve already written and making changes to it.
Guided practice/Interactive modeling(5 minutes)
- Demonstrate how you could make revisions to your piece of writing by thinking aloud about your piece. Say something like, “I wonder if it is clear that it was a very hot day? Maybe I should add some blue to the sky and a yellow sun to my illustration.”
- Display the Writing Revision Checklist and show students how you can use the checklist to help you edit your writing.
- Read each item on the checklist aloud, then pause and point out a change you could make to your story.
- Explain that you can make revisions to your writing at anytime during the writing process.
- Tell your students that now they will get a chance to make revisions to their own stories using the checklist.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Pass out the Writing Revision Checklist and a previously written story or piece or writing to each student.
- Circulate around the classroom work with individual students as needed.
Enrichment: Have more advanced students use the revision checklist on an additional piece of their writing.
Support: Provide struggling students one element of the revision checklist to focus on during the independent work time.
- Ask students to share their revised piece of writing with a partner.
- Collect the Writing Revision Checklists and revised writing pieces at the end of the lesson. Use these to assess whether students were able to make appropriate changes to their writing in the specified categories.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Invite two to three students to share their revised piece of writing with the whole class. Ask the other students in the class to provide feedback of something they appreciated about the revision. Model providing feedback as needed using the sentence frame, “I appreciated how you...”
- Review the revision process as needed.
