Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify words with the short vowel sound E. Students will brainstorm words beginning with the letter E. Students will be able to write the letter E.


Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Ask your students to recite the alphabet.
  • Tell your students that today they they will focus on the letter E.
  • Write the uppercase and lowercase letters next to each other on the board.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (15 minutes)

  • Ask your students to make the sound that the letter E makes.
  • Have your students list long E and short E words.
  • Draw pictures on the board that match the words your students say.
  • Now, cover the text with a poster or paper.
  • Have your students identify the words with the short E sound.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (5 minutes)

  • Model for students the directional instructions to write the letter E.
  • Have the students raise their writing fingers in the air and write the letter.

Independent Working Time (10 minutes)

  • Give your students the Short Vowel Sounds: E worksheet to complete.



  • Enrichment: Have your students complete the Short and Long E worksheet, going beyond the short vowel sound to learn about the long vowel sound.
  • Support: Give your students the Writing the Letter E worksheet to practice writing the letter before working with the short vowel sound.


Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Walk around while your students are completing the worksheet, making sure that they are selecting the correct answers.

Review and Closing (5 minutes)

  • With your class, create a chant about the short E sound. For example: E is for egg! E is for elbow! E is for envelope!
