The Wonderful Letter W!
Students will be able to sound out, write and recognize the letter W.
- Display the objects or images that start with W.
- Ask the students to look carefully at the objects/pictures and share with a partner what they have in common, or how they might be the same.
- Write the letter W up on the board, say its sound, and explain that today you will be learning all about the letter W, which is the first letter in each of the objects shared.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Tell the students that W is a letter that is near the end of the alphabet. Then, go over the classroom alphabet chart, and stop at the letter W.
- Explain that the upper and lowercase W looks very similar, except that the uppercase W is bigger and the lowercase W is smaller.
- Illustrate the difference between U and W by saying, "The letter U makes the uh sound and the letter W makes the wuh sound, like in the word water. Their names are similar, but their sound is different.
- Demonstrate how to write the letter W. Have the students practice drawing the letter W in the air. Remind them that when they write their letters, they should always start at the top.
Guided Practice(5 minutes)
- Ask students to think of other words that begin with the letter W.
- Create a classroom anchor chart for the letter W using input from the students.
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Pass out blank paper and crayons to each student and ask them to practice writing the upper and lowercase W on one side of the paper as many times as they can. On the other side of the paper have the students draw pictures of things that begin with the letter W.
- Provide students with objects or pictures that begin with the letter W to support them as they draw and write about the letter W.
- Have students complete the Alphabet Practice: W worksheet.
- For students who finish early, have them complete the Find the Letters: W worksheet.
- Assess how students are writing the upper and lowercase letter W and coming up with words that start with W.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Have students share their drawings with the class.
- As a class, go over the W words that students came up. Add the new words to the classroom anchor chart.
