Students will be able to articulate patterns of one more.
- Show the hundreds chart to students.
- Ask students to turn to a partner and share one thing they notice about the numbers on the chart. Encourage students to look for patterns.
- After sharing with a partner, have students come back together to share some of their observations.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Tell students that you are going to cover up five of the numbers on the hundreds chart. Have them close their eyes or turn away as you put sticky notes over five of the numbers (don't choose consecutive numbers).
- Tell students that you are going to try to figure out what numbers are missing. Think aloud as you consider the patterns in the hundreds chart and count one by one to find the missing numbers.
- Take down the sticky notes as you figure out the missing numbers.
Guided Practice(10 minutes)
- Have students close their eyes or turn away as you put one sticky note on a different number.
- Have students turn and talk to a partner about what they think the missing number is and why they think so.
- Repeat this process several more times, covering up different numbers for students to figure out.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Hand out the Hundreds Chart with Missing Numbers worksheets.
- Have students complete the worksheets, paying special attention to patterns of one more.
- Have students work with a partner to complete the worksheet.
- Have students reference a number chart when writing numbers.
- Have students create their own missing number problems using the hundreds chart.
- Have students work with consecutive missing numbers.
- Hand out index cards to students. Have them write one thing they learned about patterns of one more on the hundreds chart.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Call on a couple students to share what they wrote on their index cards.
