This tasty lesson will teach second graders about fractions using cookies.

Ready, set, fractions! In this hands-on lesson, your students will familiarize themselves with common fractions using concrete materials to practice splitting items into halves, thirds, and quarters.

Students will use their hands to mold clay into shapes, then divide those shapes into equal and unequal quarters.

Slice those pieces and mix it up! In this lesson that follows “Slice It Up! Part One,” students will begin recognizing different ways to create equal shares in whole shapes, creating a fraction poster by the end of the lesson.

Provide students with an opportunity to identify the wholes that are correctly divided into halves, thirds, and fourths (equal shares). Use this activity alone as a support lesson or alongside Cookie Fractions Fun.

It’s pizza time! Students will be introduced to the concept of partitioning shapes to create fractions that demonstrate halves, fourths, and eighths. This lesson is the first of two lessons that address second grade fraction concepts.
