It’s pizza time! Students will be introduced to the concept of partitioning shapes to create fractions that demonstrate halves, fourths, and eighths. This lesson is the first of two lessons that address second grade fraction concepts.

Slice those pieces and mix it up! In this lesson that follows “Slice It Up! Part One,” students will begin recognizing different ways to create equal shares in whole shapes, creating a fraction poster by the end of the lesson.

Teach your students to calculate fractions of 100 using a number line model.

Encourage students to explain their processes when converting from a mixed number to an improper fraction, and back again. Use this lesson on its own or as support to the lesson Single Strategy for Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers.
