Equivalent Fractions Resources

To find equivalent fractions, you can either multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same non-zero number. This process doesn’t change the fraction’s value because you are essentially multiplying or dividing by 1. For example, multiplying the numerator and denominator of 1/2 by 2 gives 2/4, a fraction equivalent to 1/2. Our equivalent fractions worksheets and resources help students practice creating and identifying fractions that look different but have the same value, reinforcing understanding of numerators, denominators, and fraction equivalence.

Students can explore equivalent fractions through step-by-step examples, hands-on exercises, and engaging problem sets. Activities include multiplying or dividing fractions to create new equivalents, simplifying fractions to check equivalence, and comparing fractions to see which are equal. By practicing these skills, learners build confidence in fraction operations and strengthen their number sense, laying the foundation for adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions in more complex problems.

These resources are designed for classroom use, homework practice, or at-home learning, and are suitable for a variety of learning styles. Teachers, parents, and homeschoolers can use the worksheets to guide students through gradual skill-building exercises, from basic multiplication and division of numerators and denominators to more advanced fraction comparisons. By mastering equivalent fractions, students enhance their mathematical reasoning, accuracy, and readiness for future topics in fractions and overall math proficiency.

Learn More About Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different, but they actually have the same value if you simplify them down. You can make equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same whole number. Need some more explanation? See our examples below!

Multiplication
You can multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to get an equivalent fraction. Let’s take a look at how to make three equivalent fractions of 23 through multiplication:
  • 23 × 22 = 46
  • 23 × 33 = 69
  • 23 × 44 = 812
Looking at these fractions, we can see that 23 = 46 = 69 = 812. These are all equivalent fractions!

Division
Now that you’ve seen how to find equivalent fractions by multiplication, you can now make equivalent fractions by division. Let’s divide 1836 to get equivalent fractions:
  • 612 ÷ 22 = 36
  • 612 ÷ 33 = 24
  • 612 ÷ 66 =12
Similar to what we did earlier, we have now made four equivalent fractions: 612 = 36 = 24= 12.

If you keep in mind that in order to work with equivalent fractions you must multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same whole number, you’ll be blazing through our equivalent fractions worksheets in no time!
