An archetype is a story element that appears over and over again in stories throughout the world, bringing a sense of familiarity to the books we read. This three-page graphic organizer features descriptions and examples of 12 character archetypes in literature. Students are asked to provide an example of each character archetype from modern literature, explaining how the modern character fits the archetype. Designed for an eighth-grade literacy curriculum, this helpful worksheet gets students thinking critically about the patterns writers draw on when telling stories. If students are stuck, feel free to use the sample answers provided in the answer key. For a fun and creative related activity, have students complete these Character Archetype Trading Cards from a novel they are currently reading!
