Learn how affixes change the meaning of words with this engaging puzzle! Students will begin at the bottom of the page with the base word start. Learners will read the clue for the next word, then use the word bank at the top to create a new word. Students are asked to change prefixes, suffixes, and base words to complete this word ladder. The first word has been filled in as an example.

Geared toward third, fourth, and fifth graders, this activity is a great way for students to learn how words are built and transformed using affixes. Even though the words in each step are related, learners will see how prefixes and suffixes can make a word mean something different.
