Context Clues Graphic Organizer

If you don’t know the meaning of a word, try using context clues to figure it out! First, students will write the unfamiliar word and any clues from the text surrounding the word, such as synonyms, antonyms, and other definitions. Then, using the context clues, learners will infer the meaning of the word. Finally, students are asked to look the word up in the dictionary to find its actual meaning.

As fifth graders begin to read more complex texts, they may encounter more unfamiliar words. By searching for context clues, students can strengthen their logical reasoning, reading comprehension, and problem-solving skills, allowing for a stronger vocabulary and more confidence as they read.
