Worksheet

Design a Helmet

Design a helmet from household objects in this engaging activity! Students will judge a piece of paper, a plastic jug, and a cardboard box based on their hardness and their ability to maintain their structure when wet. Based on their answers, learners will choose a material to make their helmet out of and explain their decision.

This practice encourages first and second graders to apply what they know about properties of matter and engineering design. Learners must think critically to determine whether each material would be suitable for a helmet and explain their choice. This design activity can also push students to be creative problem-solvers both inside and outside of the classroom.
