Determining Discounts With Double Number Lines
Great news, the item you want is on sale! But how much will you actually pay for it? For each scenario, students will fill out two number lines: one for the percentage and one for the price. Learners must then use the double number lines to calculate the final price. The first problem has been started in order to guide students’ efforts.
Using double number lines encourages sixth graders to understand the reasoning and logic behind percent change. This can strengthen learners’ proportional reasoning and number sense, allowing percent change problems to become more intuitive. Learning to calculate discounts and sale prices will also help students build financial literacy and be smarter consumers.
