Worksheet
Foreshadowing: The Train Trip
Can you guess what will happen on this train ride? In this middle-grade worksheet, students will first review the definition of foreshadowing and read examples of how it can be implied through irony, dialogue, or symbolism. Then, learners will read a passage about an upcoming trip and predict what happens next. To support their prediction, students must cite textual evidence and explain what foreshadowing device was used in the passage.
Being able to identify literary devices such as foreshadowing can deepen readers’ understanding of a text. These devices can prompt students to carefully read dialogue, take note of symbolism, analyze characters and scenes, and think critically about what may happen later on.
