Functions Handout

This reference worksheet will help students as they are learning how to determine if a given relation is a function. As this helpful handout explains, a relation is a rule that takes input values and assigns them to output values. A relation is a function if every input value has exactly one output value. Relations can be represented with sets of ordered pairs, mappings, and tables. In this one-page reference sheet, learners are provided with examples of each of the different representations of relations, as well as explanations for why each one can or cannot be categorized as a function. After students have reviewed this handout, help them apply the concept with the practice worksheet Is the Relation a Function?
