Worksheet
Garden Challenge: Area of Composite Shapes
Step into the garden of composite shapes with this area-finding worksheet! Students will find the area of composite rectilinear shapes by breaking each figure into two or more rectangles. Then, they will determine the area of each part. Using both single-digit and two-digit numbers, students will apply the area formula for rectangles and combine the partial areas to find the total area of the composite figure.
Designed for third and fourth graders, this worksheet strengthens understanding of area concepts and provides meaningful practice with applying area formulas in new contexts. As they work through the problems, students practice analyzing geometric figures, identifying efficient ways to decompose complex shapes, and completing multi-step calculations.
To reinforce the basics of calculating area, students can try Write Equations From Area Models: One-Digit Numbers. Additionally, Multiplying Using Area Models: One-Digit by Two-Digit #1 is an excellent resource that incorporates two-digit numbers in students’ calculations.
