Historical Heroes: Lorraine Hansberry

Historical Heroes: Lorraine Hansberry

Introduce children to American playwright Lorraine Hanberry, who was only 29 years old when she won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play for "A Raisin in the Sun" in 1959. Children learn how the play was inspired by Hansberry's own childhood, when her parents, civil rights activists, fought for the right to live in a whites-only neighborhood. After reading a passage about Hansberry's short life, children answer a series of nonfiction comprehension questions to help them reflect on what they have learned. Designed for a second grade social studies curriculum, this worksheet is also a nice addition to Black History Month and Women's History Month studies.
