Worksheet
Identify the Sentence: Simple or Compound
Reinforce the difference between simple and compound sentences with this upper elementary worksheet! Students will read each sentence, then determine if it is a simple or compound sentence based on whether it contains a comma and a coordinating conjunction. Then, to test their understanding of the two sentence types, learners are asked to rewrite one of the simple sentences as a compound sentence.
This grammar practice is a helpful way for third, fourth, and fifth graders to build their understanding of sentence structure. As students identify and write compound sentences, they will also practice using commas and coordinating conjunctions to combine ideas. Learners can apply these concepts in their own writing to vary their sentence structure and communicate more effectively.
