Identifying Infinitives

Use this worksheet to introduce eighth graders to infinitives! Infinitives are made of the word to and the base form of a verb. They can function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs, depending on how they’re used in a sentence. In this worksheet, students will circle the infinitives in each sentence. The first part contains sentences with only one infinitive, while the sentences in the second part include multiple.

Differentiating verbals from active verbs can ensure that students write in a clear and grammatically correct manner. By examining distinct elements of a sentence, learners can come to recognize phrases and modifiers that can be used in students’ own writing to provide sentence variety.

For extra practice, try Infinitives and Infinitive Phrases. Students can also check out Identifying Gerunds, Infinitives, and Participles for a grammar challenge.
