Mystery Vowels: CVC Words

Can you solve the mystery of the missing vowels? In this worksheet, first graders are presented with 12 CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, but each one is missing its vowel. Using the pictures to help, young readers must figure out the correct vowel and write it in the corresponding blank. Each CVC word in this practice contains a short vowel sound.

Repeated practice with CVC words is fundamental for early literacy. Encoding, or translating sounds to letters, will help students become strong spellers. As learners become more confident with CVC words, they can progress to reading and spelling CCVC and CVCC words independently.
