Worksheet
New England Colonies Postcard
Young historians get to put themselves in the shoes of American colonists and report back to the king himself in this creative worksheet! Students will be asked to imagine that they have recently come to the New England area (present-day Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) from England. They need to report back to King James I, describing life in the colonies, the things they have found so far, and what supplies they will need to survive.
Use this worksheet to help fifth graders gain a more personal understanding of the people in American history. Students will need to use their existing knowledge of the colonies alongside their critical thinking to imagine the conditions in New England and the needs of a new colonist. They can also practice writing with a more formal register (as would be appropriate when writing to the king).
