Novel Study: Esperanza Rising: Esperanza’s Homes

After reading Pam Muñoz Ryan’s novel Esperanza Rising, let students use their creativity—along with specific details from the text!—to bring the two main settings from the story to life! In this engaging and inspiring novel extension activity, fifth- and sixth-grade readers are first asked to collect and record details from the text about each of Esperanza's homes in the novel: El Rancho de las Rosas in Mexico and the company farm camp in California. Then learners will use those details and their own creative inspiration to draw, paint, or create 3-D models of both of Esperanza’s homes. Click on "View answer key" for a helpful rubric for scoring students’ products. And be sure to check out the rest of the novel study set of worksheets for Esperanza Rising!
