Novel Study: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry: Boycotts in History

After finishing Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, explore how boycotts have played a part in the country’s history with this thought-provoking extension activity. Students will research a boycott from American history, recording key details in the graphic organizer. Learners will research and record who participated and what they wanted to accomplish, as well as important moments in the timeline of the boycott and the ultimate outcome and impacts. Then, students are asked to consider the boycott that Mama organized in the story and how it impacted the Wallace store, individuals, and the community. They’ll identify similarities and differences to the boycott they researched, and evaluate which boycott was more impactful.
