Novel Study: Wonder: Write Your Postcard Precept

After finishing R.J. Palacio’s novel Wonder, encourage students to create their own precepts with this unique and engaging extension activity! On the first day of school, Auggie’s English teacher, Mr. Browne, introduces students to precepts. He says, “Basically, a precept is anything that helps guide us when making decisions about really important things.” Throughout the book, Mr. Browne introduces a new precept of the month and asks students to write a response.

In this creative and artistic activity, students will write a postcard to Mr. Browne with their own precept. After cutting out the postcard, learners will write a precept reflecting a core truth about the world and explain why they chose it. Then they will illustrate the back of the postcard with an image related to their chosen precept. For inspiration and examples, encourage students to use the Appendix of Wonder that lists Mr. Browne's monthly precepts and the "Postcard Precepts" from the students.
