Opinion Writing: Pick a Pet

Would you rather own an iguana, a goldfish, or a dog? In this writing exercise, second and third graders will choose a pet and write three reasons why they believe it is the best choice. Then, students are prompted to review their writing to make sure they explained three different reasons and used capital letters, spaces, and punctuation.

This worksheet provides an easy-to-follow structure for young writers learning to defend an opinion. Supporting writing with strong, logical reasoning will help students become more effective writers and communicators. Young writers also have the opportunity to practice reviewing their own writing for correct grammar and punctuation.
