Read and Visualize: Tarra the Elephant

Dogs are known as man’s best friend, but this special pup is an elephant’s best friend, too! Students will read a passage about Tarra and Bella, an elephant and a dog that became close friends. Readers are prompted to visualize the animal friends and discuss what they pictured afterward. Then, learners will answer four multiple-choice questions about the text.

This passage encourages second graders to visualize the events of a passage as a strategy for reading comprehension. This can help readers easily recall details and allow for greater understanding of a text. Learners will also practice identifying the main idea to give the passage a title, which is a fundamental skill for literary analysis.
