Reading BCE/CE Timelines

Investigate how to read and interpret BCE/CE timelines with this explanatory social studies worksheet! This one-page worksheet begins with some background information and a helpful explanation of how BCE/CE timelines are used to order events, as well as how to calculate the number of years between different dates. Then, students will read a BCE/CE timeline featuring different historical inventions. Young historians will need to use their understanding of BCE/CE dates to answer several questions about the events on the timeline. Students are asked to identify the earliest and latest events on the timeline, identify which of two events happened earlier, and calculate the years between different events on the timeline.
